To assess this movie frankly, one has to acknowledge first that the story is completely unoriginal and second that the outcome of the movie is predictable almost from the very first moment. In order for this to be a success, therefore, it has to provide a lot of good laughs, because it isn't going to hold anyone in suspense. Fortunately, this movie succeeds. It's very funny.
Patrick Dempsey plays Tom Bailey. Tom is a financially successful guy who meets Hannah (Michelle Monaghan) in college. They become the best of friends. Hannah, though, is unsuccessful at meeting the right guy for romance, and Tom basically sleeps through about half the female population, unwilling to do anything that might be interpreted as a commitment. Their friendship, however, is the constant in their lives. Then, after Hannah takes a business trip to Scotland and meets and decides to marry Colin (Kevin McKidd) Tom realizes that he's been in love with her from the beginning. To make matters more complicated, because he's Hannah's best friend, she asks him to be her maid of honour. He accepts, hoping to use the position to undermine her wedding and convince her that they belong together.
I thought this was very funny. I loved Hannah's Grandma's reference to Tom as "the Fornicator," and the fact that she became enamoured of the "thunderbeads." The conversation with Colin's family about what he and Hannah should name their firstborn was a hoot. ("We come from a long line of 'Atholes.'") Yes it's predictable and unoriginal. But Dempsey and Monaghan put on good performances and seem to have a good chemistry with each other, and the thing was pretty funny. I have to go all the way to 8/10 on this.
