I know that people have asked why we don’t have a regular podcast here at Screen Rant. I made an attempt about a year ago to do a weekly podcast before we had a great stable of writers, and I found it extremely difficult to do alone.
So what about now, you ask? Now it’s an issue of time, or rather not enough of it, plus trying to coordinate a time that most of us can get together when we are located across the country (with Niall in the UK!).
However this week Cinemablend was nice enough to invite me to join their regular weekly podcast “The Weekly Blend” and it was a lot of fun. Rafe, Margaret and Tim over there are all very cool and fun to chat with about our favorite topic: movies.
I thought it went pretty well and it actually gave me a

It’s almost September and that means that the big summer movie season of 2008 is finally over - but what a summer it’s been!
2008 delivered the kind of summer that superhero and action movie geeks dream of - this is the year that brought us three bonafide superhero movies: Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and what was that third one… oh yeah: The Dark Knight.
We also had the chance to see the long awaited Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the latest Pixar flick Wall-e, Will Smith as a superhero in Hancock, Angelina Jolie as an assassin in Wanted, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. To keep us laughing we had Tropic Thunder, The Pineapple Express (which I haven’t seen) and Get Smart.

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed First things first. For those of you interested and excited that Criterion is going to start releasing Blu-ray titles but worried about the cost, considering Criterion DVDs aren't exactly cheap and to spend the same kind of money on essentially the same film in high-definition need not worry so much, there is a small bit of fresh air. Of course, this isn't a solution that makes it a free upgrade, but the die-hards out there at least have an option. Criterion is offering the option that you send in your current DVD (just the disc) and $25 ($20 for the new disc and $5 for shipping) and they will send you back the corresponding Blu-ray disc. The only difference is going to be the high-definition transfer between back titles and the fact that Blu-ray editions will come in the blue case packaging. This seems

You feel good for Robert Downey Jr. right about now. The talent was never in doubt, but his future sure was. And once he got back on track, Downey appeared in a lot of films that showcased his ability, if too a smaller audience than he deserved.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Zodiac, and A Scanner Darkly all feature great Downey creations, and collectively, those movies made less in their entire theatrical runs than Iron Man made on its opening day.
But then, the Summer of Downey arrived, and because of Iron Man and Tropic Thunder, he's getting the good roles in bigger movies. It's the Johnny Depp Principle.
Downey has already been cast as Sherlock Holmes in a very ambitious new treatment of the legendary detective by Guy Ritchie, and he has nodded in agreement to a live-action adaptation of the comic series Cowboys & Aliens. Iron Man 2, of course, is in the works,

With only one weekend left to consider for Summer 2008 - and considering it will only feature College, Babylon A.D., and Disaster Movie - this is the perfect time to reflect on the highs and lows of one of the biggest, if not the biggest, summer movie season ever.
Let's start by taking a look at the top ten films over the past four months, in terms of domestic box office:
1 - The Dark Knight ($500 million plus)
2 - Iron Man ($317 million)
3 - Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull ($315 million)
4 - Hancock ($226 million)
5 - Wall-e ($216 million)
6 - Kung Fu Panda ($212 million)
7 - Sex and the City ($152 million)
8 - The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian ($141 million)
9 - The Incredible Hulk ($134 million)
10- Wanted ($133 million)
The dollars might shift a little bit, but outside of Wanted and Hulk, no movies are poised to change positions at this point, and no other

On September 19th, we'll get our next animated family movie when Igor hits theaters. It's been an up and down couple of months for animated film, with Wall-e and Kung Fu Panda soaring to great heights and Space Chimps and Fly Me to the Moon never exactly taking off (pun intended).
Igor (John Cusack) is an assistant to a mad scientist who has his own aspirations of winning the annual Evil Science Fair, only Igor's not really evil at all. These new computer animated spins on classic genres can work or they can backfire. For example, Hoodwinked was good fun, but Happily N'Ever After is one of the worst cartoons I've ever endured.
Based on the trailers, Igor looks fun, and it's written by Chris McKenna, who previously gained some experience writing for American Dad, so we'll continue to hold out hope for it. And based on a series

Most years I wait until the end of December to begin taking a look at Oscar Contenders, but this year I am going to try and keep up with them as the year goes on as the RopeofSilicon Oscar Contenders section is will be getting a drastic overhaul in the coming weeks. Instead of the simple structure you see now it will be customized based on picture and will continue to update as we get closer and closer to the big day. Hopefully this will not only keep the site (and myself) up to date on what films to keep an eye on, but I hope it also gives you another reason to look at films that aren't based on comic books and superheroes. Of course I can't do this all on my own and I don't intend to. Being the scavenger I am I am going to keep a

Yesterday, while screening a portion of footage from Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa, DreamWorks Animation guru Jeffrey Katzenberg says he sees more sequels in his studio's future.
